Sloppy Joe's

Sloppy Joe

This American favourite makes a deliciously messy treat and is a great way to use up mince beef. Ready in half an hour, your little helpers will love assembling their own Sloppy Joe's and eating them too.

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cook time: 25 minutes

Servings: 6 people

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 6 mild cheddar slices
  • 6 seeded burger rolls, halved, cut sides toasted
  • 2 tsp soft light brown sugar
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 2 tbsp English mustard
  • 2 tbsp tomato purée
  • 6 tbsp BBQ sauce
  • 1 x 500g pack mince beef
  • 1 celery sticks, finely chopped
  • 1 red pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 iceberg lettuce, shredded

Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and cook the chopped onion, red pepper and celery for 5 minutes over a high heat, stirring often.

Add the steak mince, breaking up well, and cook for 5 minutes, or until browned.

In a bowl, combine the BBQ sauce, tomato purée, English mustard, crushed garlic and brown sugar.

Stir into the pan containing the mince mixture and turn the heat down to medium.

Cook, stirring well, for another 10-15 minutes then season to taste.

Assemble the Sloppy Joe's as if they were burgers: divide the shredded lettuce between the burger roll bottoms, spoon the meat on top and finish with a slice of cheese followed by the top half of the burger roll.
