Scrummy Soda Bread

You can find all the ingredients you need to make this homemade soda bread at your local Tesco. Make it once and then enjoy all week.

Preparation

Preheat the oven to gas mark 6,  200°C or fan 180°C.

Add the milk to a measuring jug.

Squeeze the lemon using a juice squeezer, before stirring it into the milk to make it curdle.

Sift the self-raising wholemeal flour and plain flour into a large bowl.

Add the bicarbonate of soda and the remaining bran from the bottom of the sieve.

Add the curdled milk and mix the ingredients together so they form a soft dough.

You could also try adding dried fruit or seeds to give extra flavour.

Place the dough onto a floured surface and children can get stuck in with their hands to bring it all together into a round flattened ball.

Put the dough onto a baking tray lined with nonstick baking paper and ask an adult to score across the top, before placing it in the oven to bake for around 30 minutes until it’s golden.

Remove from the oven and test it by tapping the bottom.

It should make a hollow sound.

Cool on a cooling rack.

170g plain flour
1tsp bicarbonate of soda
