Food Prep Secrets for Super Speedy Meals

These handy food prep tips will help you free up some time during your busy evenings.

Freeze Fresh Herbs

Fresh herbs don’t last long in the fridge. Freeze portions in an ice cube tray with a few drops of olive oil, and then toss them straight into the pan for a herby addition to sauces and soups.

Soften Butter Quickly

Measure your butter, then grate directly into the bowl – you'll be amazed at how quickly it softens.

Cut Down on Cutting

Food processors and blenders are the ultimate tools for cooks in a rush. Most come with chopping blades, so you can avoid all the manual labour of cutting up your veg.

You can even throw soup ingredients straight into a blender and whizz them up ready to heat through at meal time.

Prepare Smoothie Packs

Save time in the morning chopping fruit for breakfast smoothies by freezing individual packs of your favourite fruity combos and chucking them straight into the blender with some yoghurt, milk or juice. As the fruit is frozen, it’ll also be deliciously chilled.

Peel Garlic Quickly

An old jam jar or Mason jar is all you need. Place the cloves with the skin on inside the jar, put the lid on, then shake vigorously until the skin is removed.

Marinate Meat in Advance

Before freezing poultry or red meat, pour some marinade in with each portion. The meat will get a nice, long soak to absorb the flavours when defrosting so it’ll be extra tasty by dinnertime.

If you're entertaining, defrost it in larger batches and pop on the grill or barbecue when your guests arrive.

Use Kitchen Scissors

Kitchen scissors are amazingly versatile tools for speeding up cooking. Use them to chop herbs, cut chicken into equal-sized pieces or divide up quesadillas and slices of pizza.

Just make sure you wash the scissors between each use, or buy several pairs with different coloured handles – using one for meat, one for fish and one for veg.
