7 Comfort Hacks for Colds and Flu

Feeling under the weather? Why not try a few of these homemade remedies and hacks to see if you can speed up your recovery time from a cold or flu.

1. Natural Throat Sweets

Soothe a sore throat by sucking cooling ice chips for some quick relief, or freeze orange juice in an ice-cube tray and suck for an extra hit of vitamin C.

2. Tissue Box Hack

Attach an old tissue box to a full one with an elastic band so you’ve got somewhere handy to dispose of used tissues.

3. Clear Sinuses in Seconds

Try this trick: Use your tongue to press the roof of your mouth, while simultaneously using a fingertip to press the skin between your eyebrows. Press and hold for 20 seconds then release – you should feel much clearer.

4. Yoga Health Benefits

The downward dog yoga position will help to drain painful sinuses. Starting on all fours, tuck your toes underneath you and lift your hips up towards the ceiling. Still with hands on the floor allow your arms to lengthen, and then let your head hang gently towards the floor.

5. Make Microwaveable Hand Warmers

Make your own soothing heat bag following the video below, just use a whole sock rather than half and add a few drops of relaxing lavender or clearing eucalyptus oil to the dry rice. Wrap around the back of your neck to soothe muscles.

6. Soothe Dry Skin

If you run out of Vaseline to help with the horror of tissue rash, porridge oats mixed with a little water can help to calm sore skin. Coconut oil or Aloe Vera gel work well too.

7. Water Bottle Trick

You can’t beat a hot water bottle for comfort when you’re feeling low, but it can also double up as a remedy. Press a warm (not hot) one onto the affected area, ideally against the pressure points on your face to help reduce sinus swelling.
