The Tesco Charity Partner initiative gives our staff and customers the chance to pool their strengths and support a cause that is close to their hearts. We worked with our first Charity Partner in 2001 and since then we have gone on to help numerous good causes across Ireland. To date, through the generosity and fundraising of customers, local communities and Tesco staff, we have raised over €1.6m for our chosen Charity Partner, Temple Street Children’s Hospital.
Temple Street Children’s University Hospital
In October 2014, we announced Temple Street Children’s University Hospital as our new Charity Partner for 2014 – 2016. Our amazing colleagues and customers have helped raise over €1million for the hospital so far.
In August 2015, our Lemonade & Lollipops fundraising event was particularly successful raising an amazing €80,000 in just six fun-filled hours for Temple Street Children's University Hospital.
One of Temple Street’s little patients, Ria Byrne (age 6) from Boyle, Co. Roscommon, helped us launch the Lemonade & Lollipops fundraiser.
Ria’s teacher was the first to notice her delayed reactions in class; shortly after Ria's parents noticed her spine starting to curve. Over a period of five days this got progressively worse and 21 July 2015, Ria went through complex brain and spinal cord surgery. The 6 year old has a long road ahead of her and the possibility of more surgery, but the family from Boyle are remaining positive that Ria is in good hands in Temple Street.
Kara O’Connor, Ria’s mum said: “The team at Temple Street are fantastic with Ria but also with us and other parents, showing constant support through something that you have little control over”.
As always, all the funds raised by our in-store charity events are used to purchase state of the art equipment to aid some of the 7,000 surgeries performed each year by the hospital's brilliant staff, who are committed to helping children like Ria.
