Here’s everything you need to know about the National Ploughing Championships 2016 that’s taking place near Tullamore Co. Offaly this year. Don't forget to come and say hello at the Tesco Experience Tent.

What Is It?

The National Ploughing Championships is Europe’s largest Outdoor Exhibition and Agricultural Trade Show. Last year the exhibition was host to 281,000 attendees and over 1,500 exhibitors with this year set to be even bigger. It all started as an inter-county ploughing championship in the 1930s and has now grown to be one of the biggest agricultural shows of its kind.

Where Is It on?

This year the National Ploughing Championships is set to take place in Screggan near Tullamore Co. Offaly, on a patch of land that spans more than 800 acres. Will Tesco Be There?

As big supporters of more than 13,000 Irish farming families and Irish food producers, Tesco will have a presence at this year’s National Ploughing Championships, with lots in store for visitors who stop by the Tesco Experience Tent.

At the Tesco Experience Tent, there will be a whole host of food suppliers and experts that work with Tesco on hand to answer questions guests have about supplying top quality Irish food to Tesco stores.

To celebrate Tesco’s pledge to 100% Irish Meat, guests will have the opportunity to sample specially prepared prime Angus beef bites throughout the busy three-day festival.

Special guests in attendance will include the Angus Society with whom Tesco Ireland are celebrating a 19 year relationship this year.

What Can Children Do at The Event?

The National Ploughing Championships is a family friendly event, meaning that there are endless events popping up to entertain younger visitors.

At the Tesco Experience Tent, there will be a special Fresh Experience Zone will be situated within the Tesco tent where the little ones can play and interact with some giant fresh produce. There will also be educational and interactive sessions where they can learn how to plant seeds. Who knows, these could be the first steps on their journey to becoming farming and agricultural stars of the future.

What Else Is On at The Event Besides Ploughing?

There’ll be lots of exciting things happening at the event, with many TV and radio stations broadcasting certain segments live from Screggan. You could be famous by the time you leave!

This year, the range of events at the National Ploughing Championships will also include the following activities: fashion shows, loy digging, live music, Husqvarna Irish Axe Factor, Innovations Area, pole climbing, Irish Farmers Journal Sustainable Suckling Arena, FRS & FBD safe tractor driving demos & challenges, hunt chase, pony club games, ICA demonstrating and seminars, the ‘most appropriately dressed competition’, cookery demonstrations, vintage machinery exhibitions, threshing, sheep dog trials and the All-Ireland Lamb Shearing Competition.

Will There Be Any Competitions?

Visitors will have the chance to take part in a number of giveaways and special promotions across the three days at the Tesco Experience Tent, but the most exciting competition at the event will be run in conjunction with the Irish Angus Producers Group.

Attendees will have the opportunity to win a €3,000 voucher towards the purchase of an Irish Angus animal at the Irish Angus Cattle Society’s Elite Sale in Carrick-on-Shannon on 10 December 2016. What Should I Wear?

There’s a strong chance of rain and wind as always at this year’s event but temperatures could reach as high as 14 degrees Celsius. To stay dry, pack a raincoat or pick up a free Tesco Poncho at the Tesco Experience Tent. Whatever you do, don't forget to bring suitable footwear to handle what could turn into some mucky terrain.
